Perunnal 2011
Posted in: The Church, The Village | Comments (0)
It is always good to start a new year with our own Perunnal. As usual, we just celebrated our perunnal this year. For those, who don’t know, this is usually on the second weekend of the year. This year we saw some unusual guests for this occasion. The Camels!. I haven’t seen camels in kerala that much. Where do they come from? But, I am sure, this will be remembered by the kids for EVER.
I still remember the time when we had a real horse for the procession. That was about 30 years ago and the competition between the three (used to be three groups then) groups (aka “wards” )was really exciting. That was a very long time ago, but the images of that beautiful white horse is still in high definition in my mind. Very clean and the local “St. George guy” was very lucky to be on top of it on that day. (at least that’s how I would’ve felt it.) The group that brought the horse didn’t “win” that year, but for the next several years, getting a pony for my self remained as one of the main goals in my life. It still is.!! May be some day…
Anyway, back to 2011, this was a beautiful event and congratulations to all the leaders who coordinated this mega event in Parampuzha. See you next year.

First Holy Communion on April 25th, 2010
Posted in: The Village | Comments (0)
This year’s first Holy Communion at the Parampuzha Bethlehem church is scheduled to be on April 25th. Congratulations kids. As usual, confirmation will also be held at the same occasion. This year, there will be around 65 kids receiving Holy Communion. Will upload pictures when they are available. If you are one of them and would like to upload your picture, feel free to do so.
First Communion is traditionally an important festive occasion for Roman Catholic families. Also, Holy Communion is the second sacrament of the seven. It is a practice that is meant to be observed over and over throughout the life of a Christian. It is a holy time of worship when we corporately come together as one body to remember and celebrate what Christ did for us.

My First School
Posted in: The School | Comments (0)
It was about 30+ years ago that I studied in this school. I lived pretty close to the school and it made perfect sense to choose this school. Just like most other folks in the school, I was also fortunate enough to go home and eat lunch and come back in time for the afternoon classes. To me, this was like a huge campus. Big grounds. Big roads.. No congesting traffic. A big procession in the mornings, afternoon and evenings. Roads were full with just students.
Well I was in the primary school and this was the only schools I ‘ve seen.. And of course it wasn’t a high school then. Students will have to find other schools when they prove they are worthy of attending the 8th standard. I had a great time over there. Good teachers, good friends and I got my basics right, while I was there.
Now, after 30+ years, I went back to the school to see the changes.
Wow! Amazing. I was expecting a completely different picture. I was expecting to be surprised by the developments. But… More on page 136

Parampuzha Bethlehem Church. This is the most famous land mark in parampuzha. The church was built in 1915.
Vicar: Rev:Fr. Philip Vaikathukaran
Asst: Vicar: Fr: Antony Kachamkode
History
The church was built in 1915 with the support of all the people in Parampuzha. Not just Catholics. Parampuzha always had an active and very intelligent group of people. The village really had some true visionaries.
The land required to build the church, the school and even more were donated by a generous person named Irumpanam Ouseph. He was thoughtful enough to give enough land to the church so that, the priests and others involved with the church can survive in difficult times. Church can do some farming and live on what they produce. Which makes sense, considering how the folks might have felt about the continuous collections they have to put up with in those days for the church fund. (In fact this is one of the reasons, even today, Catholics in Kerala think, the church can survive without the Sunday collections.!! – or atleast this is how they justify themselves, I guess.)
